Nonequilibrium fluctuations in quantum heat engines: theory, example, and possible solid state experiments

چکیده
We study stochastic energetic exchanges in quantumheat engines. Due tomicroreversibility, these obey a fluctuation relation, called the heat enginefluctuation relation, which implies the Carnot bound: nomachine can have an efficiency greater thanCarnot’s efficiency. The stochastic thermodynamics of a quantumheat engine (including the joint statistics of heat andwork and the statistics of efficiency) are illustrated bymeans of an optimal two-qubit heat engine, where each qubit is coupled to a thermal bath and a two-qubit gate determines energy exchanges between the two qubits. We discuss possible solid-state implementationswith Cooper-pair boxes andflux qubits, quantumgate operations, and fast calorimetric on-chipmeasurements of single stochastic events.

A review of quantum thermodynamics
In this article, we present a brief and elementary review of quantum thermodynamics and its achievements and challenges. This review includes an introduction to some fundamental concepts such as internal energy, heat, work, entropy, entropy production, thermal equilibrium, second law of quantum thermodynamics, relation between thermodynamics and information theory, as well as a discussion of ho...

Simply put, fluctuation theorems connect the probabilities for quantities like work, heat or particle number in an experiment to those that would be observed in a time-reversed set-up. Although these relations only hold when both the forward and backward processes start out in thermal equilibrium, they apply to systems that may be subsequently driven arbitrarily far from equilibrium. They are n...
متن کاملNonequilibrium Steady State Thermodynamics and Fluctuations for Stochastic Systems
We use the work done on and the heat removed from a system to maintain it in a nonequilibrium steady state for a thermodynamic-like description of such a system as well as of its fluctuations. Based on a generalized Onsager-Machlup theory for nonequilibrium steady states we indicate two ambiguities, not present in an equilibrium state, in defining such work and heat: one due to a non-uniqueness...
متن کاملBig Entropy Fluctuations in Nonequilibrium Steady State: A Simple Model with Gauss Heat Bath
Large entropy fluctuations in a nonequilibrium steady state of classical mechanics were studied in extensive numerical experiments on a simple 2–freedom model with the so–called Gauss time–reversible thermostat. The local fluctuations (on a set of fixed trajectory segments) from the average heat entropy absorbed in thermostat were found to be non–Gaussian. Approximately, the fluctuations can be...
متن کاملEfficiency bounds for nonequilibrium heat engines
We analyze the efficiency of thermal engines (either quantum or classical) working with a single heat reservoir like an atmosphere. The engine first gets an energy intake, which can be done in an arbitrary nonequilibrium way e.g. combustion of fuel. Then the engine performs the work and returns to the initial state. We distinguish two general classes of engines where the working body first equi...
